psPubs - Southend
Had to start with Southend really even though in percentage terms (ok, just realised I will have a London section that may trump it) I've probably been to the fewest pubs of anywhere I've been for any length of time. Let's cut to the chase with a few off the top of my head that are pretty close by
Ye Olde Smack (Old Leigh) - Based in the old fishing town, the interior reflects the local industry. Not fishy but seaside memorabilia. Always seem to have friendly staff but the pièce de resistance is the balcony overlooking the estuary that can be sat on during those lazy summer evenings. Probably still my favourite pub in Southend.
The Peter Boat (Old Leigh) - If the Smack's full or we're making a crawl of it, quite frequently go here. Vast seating capacity outside means you get a seat but also attracts underaged drinking and trouble. Shame really. In winter, though, if it's not too busy, you can't argue with it.
The Broker (Leigh) - Closer to home and decent enough to stop by in after a few racks of snooker. Big screen for sport but not a lot else stands out.
Blue Boar (By Roots Hall) - Pub where my beloved Southend United was conceived. Renovated recently which is a bit of a shame. Has a locallish feel but you still feel pretty welcome.
The Spread Eagle (By Roots Hall) - Probably the main pub to go in before matches but it does get horrendously busy. Generally a good atmosphere there butt hen I never go other than before match days.
The Last Post (High Street) - Just off Southend train station (south), this is better than a typical Spoons because of the distinctive decor but it still feels like a Spoons. Cheap drink but no music or football are both annoying.
